A Shabbat Chanukah nugget

Jewish law dictates that a person must not utilise the light of the Chanukah candles for any other purpose than the mitzvah itself. If it is dark we can’t benefit from their glow and if it’s cold, we can’t enjoy their warmth. All we can do is look at the candles. And ponder. What might these candles be communicating with us today?

The miracle of Chanukah may have taken place some 2,200 years ago, yet it’s messages are still pertinent. The victory of values over might. The plight of the victims over their abusers. The recognition of the many miracles that surround us every day. The value of positivity over negativity. The battle for keeping Judaism pure and free from corruption. Our children and the makings of a modern-day Maccabee. There are many more. What will Chanukah mean to you this year?
