Parsha: Eikev (2024)
How do you know if someone is truly invested in a relationship?
One of the indications is when one puts great focus and importance on the “small details” of the relationship. While it is natural to overlook the small details in life, however it is in those nuances that can really make the difference.
The opening verse to the Parsha reads as follows: “And it will be, EIKEV (because) you will heed these ordinances and keep them and perform them.”
This is not the usual Hebrew word for because. Typically the torah will use the word “KI” (כי).
The word “Eikev” also means heel. The sages point out that this unique chosen word expresses the “heel” approach to life.
The heel, refers to the small things that can easily get trampled on by our heels. The things that most people won’t pay attention to, but actually hold great importance.
The message here is to reflect on our relationship with G-d and think about the “small things” that sometimes get forgotten.
The Parsha continues to spell out the reward and blessings, that come as a result of taking our relationship seriously, even in the small details.
“I will keep for you the “Brit” covenant and the kindness that He swore to your forefathers.” The word Brit or covenant, express the everlasting bond between G-d and the Jewish people. It is the very bond that keeps us connected even when we may not be worthy it. It is because of this connection we are an “everlasting nation.”
The same thing applies to our personal relationships, when we put emphasis and care into the “Eikev” – the small details, we can be more certain that the relationship will be long lasting.
