Parsha: Va’etchanan (2025)

The past week has been a challenging one for many of us. On the day of Tisha bav, a day of mourning for all the Jewish people, we witnessed a deeply disturbing rally right here in Sydney. Naturally this can cause fear, and uncertainty.
How fortunate are we, that we are a strong people. We have a long history of bravery, strength, and defiance against evil tyrants and hatred.
It is in these moments that we react with a true Jewish response. We respond with a resolve to continue to live as proud Jews. We will continue to stand tall against these bullies.
Many Shules in Sydney this week are calling this Shabbat, “The Shabbat of Building Bridges of light.” In the face of darkness, we respond by bringing more light into the world. A strong, proud Jewish community that is connected is the best remedy for the challenges we face.
In addition, this Shabbat we also celebrate the significant and joyous day of Tu’Bav (15th of Av). Although this day is not so well known and mysterious, the Talmud does recount 7 special events that occurred on this day. Most of these events are connected to celebrating marriage, and with the Holy Temple. One underlying theme between all if them, is the full moon that is seen on this day.
Tu’ Ba’v being the 15th day has a full moon.
The Jewish people count our months by the moon. This is because it represents our story. At times things seem to be very dark, but we are guaranteed that the moon will shine again in its full glory.
How prefect and befitting it is to celebrate Tu’ Bav, a reminder that the light of the Jewish people will shine brightly. Even after experiencing a Tisha bav and disturbing close to home events, we are reminded that the brightest moments are ahead. This confidence can fill our hearts with hope and faith.
Shabbat Shalom
