Parsha: Toldot (2024)
Digging wells?
A central focus of Isaacs life
is focused on digging wells.
What does it teach us?
How is it relevant ?
The Torah puts an emphasis on Issac digging wells. A seemingly unimportant detail in the life of Issac.
One lesson that we can learn is the concept of perseverance. Such an important lesson.
A few months ago, I saw a line that I have been thinking about. “Success doesn’t come from talent, or genius, it comes from perseverance.” The story of Issac digging the wells, brings out this point. Whenever Issac managed to dig a well he found that the Philistines kept on causing him trouble. At first, the Philistines seized the wells that Isaac dug.
However Issac did not give up. He kept digging wells, and the Philistines kept on either filling them with earth or seizing them.
This did not stop Issac. Eventually Issac’s perseverance paid off. In the end they actively sought him out to make peace with him.
As the Parsha describes, “The king of Philistia and his entourage said to Isaac, We have seen that Gd has been with you, so we said: Let there now be a solemn oath between us and let us make a covenant with you.”
We learn from Isaac to not be discouraged in the face of unexpected setbacks. Rather, we should continue our endeavours, which are certain to eventually succeed.
Shabbat Shalom!
