Parsha: Vayakhel (2025)

There is a difference between a house and a home. A house is merely a physical structure, that provides shelter and a place to live. A home carries a more personal and emotional connotation, encompassing feelings of belonging and comfort.

It is far easier to have a house than to create a “home.”

What is the most important element in creating a home?

The Former Sephardi Chief Rabbi of Israel, Rabbi Yitzchok Yosef shared the following insight:

Kaddish is one of the most sacred and prominent prayers in Judaism. It is at the end of the Kaddish that we find a peculiar custom. Before saying “Oseh Shalom,” we take 3 steps back.

Why do we take these 3 steps specifically when we mention “Peace” (Shalom)?

Rabbi Yosef answered, that many times people can have difference of opinions on many areas of life. Whether its business, family life, Religion, politics etc. This is perfectly normal and ok.

The problem is, when it turns from sharing an honest opinion to sturbboness. The insistence to be always the winner of the dispute. When it turns to stubboness that’s when it becomes a problem.

This is why we need to take 3 steps back before we arrive at peace. Allowing ourselves to truly look at it from an honest and objective point of view. This is what can create the “home” atmosphere. Allowing space for others.

Taking a few steps back also means not standing on the side of the argument against the opponent. We step away from the conflict to truly see the perspective of another person.

May we see peace in Israel and all around the world. Amein.

Shabbat Shalom
